Blonde Bootcamp

Eva Therese Studios Top Tips on How to Maintain Healthy Hair While Being a Blonde! Here is your personal blonde treatment plan, from your hair personal trainer!

Maintaining the health of blonde hair is never easy, and as one client wrote to me recently,

"My hair is reeeeaally dry now, with the blond and winter combo. I was wondering if you could put me on some kind of health treatment plan, like a personal trainer for hair."

When going blonde, we are removing pigment, as apposed to adding as we do with colour. That said, adding back moisture and a small amount of protein is essential. When the hair shaft is full of moisture, it doesn't need to go out into the air to try and find it, this is what causes the frizz. As with all my recommendations, consistency is really key! Keep at it and you will have amazing results in no time! Here we go!

1. Deep Treatments and a good quality conditioner are your best friends! My absolute favourites are Smooth Sexy Hair conditioner by sexy hair and Wella Brilliance hair Mask for Course hair.

Step by step process: Once per week

1. Apply hair oil to dry hair and coat ends, leave for about 20 min
2. Shampoo roots (not ends). Every two weeks shampoo with a purple shampoo. This will reduce any brassiness between salon visits, but is drying, so don't over-use!
3. Apple Cider Vinegar rinse (more about this in another blog) just rinse out, do not shampoo again.
4. remove excess water gently from hair with towel or old t-shirt
5. Apply heavy conditioner or mask preferably with a bit of Keratin (or other protein) and cover with plastic cap. Use under heat preferably, but regardless, leave on for 20 minutes,
6. Rinse out with cool water.

This will set the stage for hair that is hydrated and ready to style.

2. When styling, use heat as little as possible. So choose a style without heat (blog on this coming soon), or pick between blowdrying or using a hot tool like curling iron or flat iron. Make sure you use either a heat protecting spray or serum before you do anything with heat styling. This is a must.

3. Maintaining daily moisture is key. I only recommend shampooing once per week, two times max. Use a dry shampoo in between if you must. After a month, your hair will be more healthy and your ends less dry. Use a small amount of hair oil on your ends daily before bed to help prevent breakage.

4. Brushing your hair is also beneficial to move the healthy oils from roots to ends. My fave method is the inversion method. Flip head upside down between your knees and message roots with tiny amount of oil, and then brush from scalp to ends for 4 minutes a day. You will see improved scalp and hair health over time, which leads to less breakage and
increased growth.

5 top reasons to use hair oil (for men and women)

5 top reasons to use hair oil

Last week I did a post about how you would use hair and scalp oil, and now I will explain the why. Although there are more then just five, here are my top reasons for using hair and scalp oil! Hair oil has been used for thousands and thousands of years for healthy locks all over the world! These tips are good for men and women at any age or hair texture! Number 5 might pleasantly surprise you!

1. Less Breakage!

When the ends of your hair are dehydrated, it's much more likely to break. Hair is constantly growing from your head 1/2 inch to an inch a month. The reason you don't see length is because it is growing and breaking. Sometimes more breaks then what grows. When you add a small amount of hair oil to the ends before bed, your hair is more supple, and therefore less likely to break while you sleep. Regular small trims and dedication to this tip and you will see growth in no time! Doing a small trim will take off much less then if the hair is left dry and brittle, and starts to break up the shaft from split ends.

2. Healthy Scalp

Create the ideal conditions for new growth! The overuse of shampoo, buildup of styling products and even chlorine in the water can can lead to a dry flaky scalp and clogged hair follicles. Even a mild scalp fungus like Ring Worm is quite common and causes dry scalp, redness and hair loss. This is why I always recommend an apple Cider Vinegar Rinse after your shampoo every few weeks to clarify and balance the scalp. Clearing any gunk and buildup off your scalp is vital to the health of your hair and new hair growth. This is one of the reasons that the vast number of my Love My Magic Hair and Scalp Oil are Essential and Carrier Oils that help heal and maintain scalp health. Click here for more info on my Oil.  The best way to use the oil is a daily ritual. Sit in a comfortable hair and let your head hang upside down between your knees and take a pea sized amount of oil to start on the tips of your fingers. Start massaging the oil into your scalp and slowly and deeply until you reach your forehead. The inversion of your head will allow the blood to rush to your head further stimulating your scalp while you massage. You can then finish by brushing your hair/scalp while your head is still inverted, and this will distribute the oil to your ends. I have seen incredible results in hair length and scalp health using this method myself and clients who have practiced this method with consistency. This process takes about 4 minutes, so I just put on my favourite youtube and enjoy the mini-break!

3. Shine

This one is simple. When the hair is given the sustenance it needs, it has incredible shine! It looks healthy, full and nourished! This is not to be confused with oily.  The amount of hair oil you will use should start off very modestly depending on your texture. When you are using the correct amount, it will absorb into your hair/scalp and create shine without looking oily.

4. Reduced frizz

Frizz is created by the hair lacking moisture and sustenance. When the hair is lacking these vital ingredients it expands out to the atmosphere to try and absorb moisture from the air! This is why frizz gets so big! When the hair is full and nourished with the moisture of oil, it doesn't need to take a journey outward :)

5.  Elevated mood

Essential oils are incredible for uplifting mood! Sweet Orange essential oil has an uplifting fragrance, and lavender a calming effect. Clary sage calms the nervous system during times of stress and depression and uplifts mood. Aromatherapy can make you feel uplifted and stimulate calming and uplifting emotions! I included many of my favourites in my Magic Hair and Scalp oil, but you can experiment with essential oils that you are drawn to! Adding essential oils to your hair and scalp will leave you smelling and feeling great!

6 Insider tips for Flawless Frizz Free Curls!

6 Insider tips for Flawless Frizz Free Curls!

Growing up with a mother, sister and best friend with wild curly hair, I have a lifetime of first-hand knowledge of the challenges of curly hair. I started my career in a multi-ethnic hair salon so I could learn the ins and outs of all types of hair, and understanding curls is a passion. Here are a few of my favourite tips I've gathered over the years to tame frizz, sculpt curls, and encourage growth!

1. Only shampoo once a week

I know it ha been pounded into mainstream culture that you should be washing daily! Lather, rinse, repeat...it's great for shampoo sales, but not for the hair! Shampooing daily strips your hair of it's natural oils that keep your hair moisturized and healthy. When you shampoo daily you are stripping those oils out! As a result, the scalp over produces oil to try and keep up with what you're stripping, and you are left with oily scalp and dry hair. Then you shampoo more to try and get rid of it. The cycle continues. Moisture is the key to great hair. After one month, your scalp will adjust to your new shampoo routine and normalize.  Please choose a sulphate free shampoo. It will not dry out your hair with unnecessary chemicals.

2. Moisture is the key

Moisture, moisture, moisture!!! When your hair is frizzy, it is looking for moisture! The hair is dry and actually trying to get moisture from the air, which is why it is moving away from your head and getting bigger and bigger! When you wet your hair daily, add hair oil, a leave-in conditioner or a serum, you are giving the curls the sustenance they need! Although this is a daily step, because your hair is not thirsty, it will be softer, quenched and will be much easier to style.

"I am officially obsessed with this oil!!! It's the first one I've ever used that actually works on my hair and my daughters! It smells amazing and my hair feels so soft and rejuvenated without leaving it greasy. Thank you!" -Melissa M (Toronto)

3. Treat your curls!

A by-weekly treatment is a must. This can include a conditioning mask, hair oil, and deep conditioner. In order to really get the most of this step, you will need a plastic cap. Do your weekly shampoo, and then a apple cider vinegar rinse (described in the next section). Remove some of the water from your hair with a t-shirt and coat with your treatment and oil of choice, concentrating on ends. Put on the plastic cap and let the hot water from your shower warm up the treatment. You can also use a dryer if you have one after you leave the shower. The heat will allow the cuticle of the hair to open like a little flap, and the treatment will penetrate more fully. Leave this on for a minimum of 20 minutes. When you rinse it off use cooler water. This will seal the moisture into your hair and create incredible shine. You can also book a deep treatment at the studio every few weeks for a relaxing hair rejuvenation and let me do all the work for you!

4. Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse

One of my favourite hair tips is the Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse! The brand I prefer is Braggs. Please use a non-filtered ACV, with the mother intact brand. It is very affordable and available at most health food stores. This is a step you would do every few weeks. Bring a 1/4 of a cup to 1/2 a cup into the shower, depending on the thickness of your hair. After your shampoo, tilt back your head and pour the ACV on your scalp and let it pour down your hair. The hear is wet and this will dilute the ACV. Make sure not to get it in your eyes! Ouch!! Keep head tilted back. Let this sit for a few minute and then rinse with water and do not shampoo out! Continue with your treatment or conditioner after this step.  This step will balance your scalp pH, clear build-up and clogged hair follicles, resolve dandruff, and strengthens hair roots to promote growth and create beautiful shine!  It really works wonders!!

5. Shape curls with fingers

Different curls and styles require various amounts of curl volume, but this step helps tame frizz.
When your hair is sopping wet, use your favourite hair oil or leave-in and separate smaller tendrils and wrap around your finger in the natural direction the curl wants to form. Do this especially around your face. This will smooth the cuticle and define the curl. It helps for a more polished curl, and also reduces frizz dramatically!

6. Don't Scrunch with a towel

Please use a old t-shirt or micro fibre towel instead. Your shaping should be done on soaking hair, and at this step when you are removing the excess water, using a traditional towel to scrunch will immediately cause the hair to frizz. Remove the water with a shirt or allow it to air dry. It will be so much healthier!

Four amazing tips for using hair oil to get your healthiest and longest hair!

Four amazing tips for using hair oil to get your HEALTHIEST and LONGEST hair!

Clients are always asking me how to get their hair to grow longer and healthier. Most asked question in all my years of doing hair! Hair oiling has been practiced for thousands of years and is an Ayurvedic staple for long lush locks. There are different ways to use oil for hair and scalp health, and I will get into the details below. Try some of these practices consistently and you will be shocked and amazed at the results.

1. OIL THOSE ENDS! Before you go to bed, take a very small amount of hair oil on the tips of your fingers and run it over the ends of your hair. Use your palms and fingers to then smooth the oil along the length of your hair, concentrating on the ends. Enough to add a bit of moisture and supple feeling, but not enough to make your hair appear oily. Less is more with this practice. For thicker and courser hair types, you can add a bit more but always start small and work up. This helps prevent breakage while you sleep that makes you lose length!

2. MASSAGE THAT SCALP! Another amazing practice with hair oil is a daily scalp massage. Taking a small amount of oil on the tips of the fingers, put your head upside down between your knees and let your hair hang down. Start to massage your scalp from the neck toward the forehead with enough pressure to create a relaxing sensation. This practice stimulates the blood flow to the hair follicles, and helps get rid of dry scalp that may be blocking hair follicles and sebum production.  My favourite practice is listening to music while I do the scalp massage, then brush my hair while my head is still upside down. This distributes the oil to the ends and sluffs off any dry scalp. Consistency is key!

3. WARM IT UP! Warm oil treatments are an excellent way to moisturize and revitalize dull dry locks. After washing, add hair oil to your favourite conditioner and massage from roots to tips. Cover your hair with a plastic cap and let the oil sit for 15-30 minutes. Cover with a hot towel or warm with your blow dryer. The warmth opens up the cuticle and lets the oil better penetrate the hair shaft. To seal in the treatment, rinse with cold water to close the hair cuticle at the end of the 30 minutes.

4. TREAT YOURSELF! Another incredibly relaxing option, is to book a treatment appointment, and come to the studio for a wash, where I will do a thorough wash, and then scalp massage with deep penetrating conditioning treatment and Love My Magic Hair and Scalp Oil. Then you will relax under the warm dryer and enjoy a tea and magazine while your hair soaks up all the nourishing goodness!

"This oil works amazingly!! And it smells really nice."-Sasha (Toronto)

Magical hair and scalp oil! A blend of Organic Carrier oils and Essential Oils chosen after years of research and use on clients! I have been a hairdresser for 13 years and use this oil I've created to treat dandruff, dry hair, dry ends, promote hair growth and keep hair supple and strong!
*Orange Oil is rich in Vitamin C, which is easily absorbable. Additionally, it dilates the blood capillaries. So, using the orange oil in hair massage treatment helps to enhance blood circulation. This means that there is better nourishment for the hair follicles, which in turn helps to promote hair growth.
*Clary Sage Oil promotes hair growth and stimulates the scalp
*Geranium Oil strengthens hair
*Golden Jojoba Oil moisturizes the hair, adds nutrients, and stimulates the scalp
*Lavender Oil deep conditions the hair, keeps it shiny, and helps control dandruff
*Moroccan Argan Oil moisturizes, nourishes, and provides antioxidants to hair.
*Rosemary Oil stimulates the roots, improves hair growth, and increases circulation in the scalp
*Neem Oil promotes hair growth, conditions dry, under nourished hair, helps with dandruff and itching, relieves eczema symptoms, keeps scalp healthy, and gets rid of hair lice to name a few.
*Peppermint Oil is extremely rich in essential fatty acids and essential ingredients that are going to stimulate your scalp’s health, they are going to get rid of yeast colonies and also help your scalp stay “clean” from dandruffs and inflammations, it is used as an excellent coolant because it is going to keep your scalp refreshed and also smelling extremely nice
*Apricot Kernel Oil It’s rich in vitamins A, D & E and in both oleic acid and linoleic acid. It’s a polyunsaturated oil which penetrates hair effortlessly without leaving any type of oily residue like olive or jojoba oil. Apricot oil on the hair can help make your hair soft and shiny. It keeps hair roots and strands well nourished and moisturized, stimulates the follicles and improves hair growth too.

"It has been a year now that I have been going to Eva for Scalp and Hair products and treatments.
Having never been a big fan of the way products "feel" on my head I was overwhelmed by the knowledge and care that Eva took to put together a customized, healthy, natural solution for my hair and scalp.
Having a full head of Dreadlocks always presented some difficulties for me in regards to keeping my skin healthy. Eva's recommendations and products made those difficulties go away and have now become an essential part of my hair care solution."
